Ah, winter weddings. Sound dreamy, don’t they? Flickering candles, fairy lights, maybe even a dusting of snow. But let’s be honest – it’s the Midlands. We don’t always get the memo.
One minute you’re picturing something from Father of the Bride, Love Actually, or a random Hallmark Christmas movie… the next, you’re wondering if your fingers will ever feel warmth again.
As a wedding photographer in Birmingham who’s spent more than a few hours shooting in the cold, I can tell you this: winter wedding photography can be bloody stunning – if you know how to plan for it.
So, grab a cuppa, wrap yourself in a blanket (or TARDIS dressing gown if you’re me), and let’s talk about how to make your West Midlands winter wedding photos look magical – without turning blue.
Here’s the thing about winter in the UK – the light disappears faster than the prosecco at your reception. If you’re used to long summer days, this one’s a shocker.
Top tip: Plan your ceremony early enough to catch natural light for portraits. A 1pm ceremony gives you just enough wiggle room before the sun buggers off around 3:30.
The flip side? Winter light is gorgeous. It’s soft, romantic, and flattering as hell – even if you’re camera-shy, or hate having your photo taken. No harsh shadows, no squinting. Just golden, even tones that make everything look like a fairy tale.

It’s easy to fall for the Hallmark trap: faux fur wraps, sparkly heels, open-air group shots in front of frosty trees. Reality check: the UK does “wet” better than “snowy.”
My advice:
If you’re worried about looking bundled up, trust me – genuine laughter beats goosebumps every time.

You’ve got some cracking indoor winter wedding venues around Birmingham and the West Midlands that make winter weddings shine.
Did you know you can get married right at the top of the Library of Birmingham in the Shakespeare Room? Or even next door in the Rep? Talk about unique.
Something grander? As a Coventry Kid, I’ve fond memories of picnics at Coombe Abbey – a stunning spot with 500 acres of parkland.
And back in Birmingham, Fazeley Studios in Digbeth is one of the most popular venues – that urban vibe looks good whatever the weather.
These places look amazing no matter what the weather does – which means less stress, fewer location changes, and more actual enjoyment of your day.

There will come a point when you’ll shiver. That’s okay. The trick is to embrace it. Some of my favourite shots have happened when couples were laughing through a gust of wind or snuggling for warmth.
I’ll keep you moving, cracking jokes, and giving you breaks when needed. You don’t need to suffer for good photos – you just need to stay you.
(Also, I’ve been known to carry hand warmers. Just saying.)

Winter wedding photography in Birmingham needs a bit of planning – the light goes fast, and timing is everything.
Here’s what I usually recommend:
Ceremony: Between 12 and 1pm
Group photos: Immediately after, while the light’s good. But remember the rule is a maximum of ten groups! No one wants a Blue Gran!
Couple portraits: Straight after groups (even 15 minutes is enough)
Evening fun: Fairy lights, sparklers, or an indoor setup – go wild
You can still have an epic evening party; just plan the key shots before the sun goes down.

Winter brings mood. Embrace it!
Your winter wedding photos will look cinematic if you lean into it, not against it.
Here’s a story for you.
I got married in August – I know, not on brand for this article, but bear with me – and we had the choice of indoors or outdoors. I check Siri on the day? 0% chance of rain.
Outdoors it was! Lovely ceremony, cried on cue. Heavens opened just as we signed the register and everyone dashed back indoors. Bloody Siri.
Remember, take weather apps with a pinch of salt.
My father got married the same year. In December. In a zoo. It was bloody freezing.
I asked him for his top tips – and you can see me chat to him in the video above. But here are my parents’ top tips:

This one’s not my photo, but it does show my Dad in a golf cart on his wedding day. Watch the video for more information.
Your wedding doesn’t need to be a fairytale – it just needs to feel like you.
If you’re planning a winter wedding and want photos that feel relaxed, fun, and totally you — I’d love to help. Let’s chat (preferably over tea, possibly with cake).

Paul Phipps-Williams is a geeky wedding and event photographer from Birmingham. He has a giant tattoo of Billie Piper and is very, very bad at kickboxing.
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Paul. My full name is actually ‘Paul, would-you-like-a-drink.’
For those of you who I chat with at the bar after I finish taking photographs, I’d appreciate it if you could use my full name. Thanks.
